Is FPV drone flying legal in the UK? Yes — here's what you need to know.
FPV drones are legal to fly in the UK for recreational use — you need a free CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID, nothing more. Below you'll find honest answers on UK drone law, licence requirements, age rules, pricing, repairs, and how the drones work. If your question isn't here, join the waitlist and reply to the confirmation email.
Availability
When will the drones be available?
We're targeting our first production run in the near term. Waitlist members get priority access in signup order — join to receive updates when there's something real to say.
Why a waitlist instead of pre-orders?
Two reasons. First, we don't want your money before we can ship a product. Second, we want to keep production matched to demand carefully in our first year — overproducing means cashflow problems, underproducing means disappointing customers. The waitlist gives us the right signal.
Can I see a MemAero drone in person before ordering?
We'll be doing demonstration events around the North West. Waitlist members get first invitations. If you're nearby and interested, reply to your waitlist email and we'll work something out.
Pricing
What's the price going to be?
Founders pricing for waitlist members will be confirmed in your confirmation email. We'll publish full RRP when we open public orders.
Why isn't it cheaper?
Honest answer: a properly-built, repairable, UK-made drone at 50 units a month can't be sold for £150 and stay in business. Our pricing reflects what it actually costs to make a product like this, with margin to keep the doors open. If you want a £100 toy drone, you can buy one from anywhere. If you want a tool that works for years and gets repaired when it doesn't, that's us.
UK law & CAA
Is an FPV drone legal to fly in the UK?
Yes — FPV drones are legal to fly in the UK for recreational use. You need a free CAA Flyer ID (an online theory test) and an Operator ID (a simple registration). Both are free and take under an hour. Drones over 100g — which includes all MemAero models — must be registered. You must fly within Visual Line Of Sight and follow the UK Drone Code.
Do you need a licence to fly an FPV drone in the UK?
No formal pilot licence is required for recreational FPV flying in the UK. You need a free CAA Flyer ID (a short online theory test) and an Operator ID. Commercial use — filming for money, for example — requires a GVC qualification and additional CAA authorisation. We include full registration guidance with every MemAero drone.
What age can a child fly a drone in the UK?
In the UK, pilots under 13 cannot hold their own Operator ID — a parent or guardian must be the registered operator. Children of any age can fly under adult supervision. There is no minimum age for the Flyer ID theory test, so younger teenagers can take it themselves. MemAero drones are not toys; they are suitable for teenagers flying under parental guidance with proper instruction.
Is a MemAero drone suitable for a teenager?
Yes, with appropriate parental involvement. A parent or guardian must hold the Operator ID for pilots under 13. Teenagers 13 and over can register independently. MemAero drones run ArduPilot with Position Hold and autonomous return-to-home — features that make learning to fly safer. Full CAA guidance is in the box.
Can I fly out of sight?
No. UK law requires Visual Line Of Sight (VLOS) for all consumer drone flight. The autonomy features — waypoints and return-to-home — keep the drone within VLOS. They don't enable BVLOS flight, which requires a specific CAA Operational Authorisation.
Repairs & support
What if my drone breaks?
We repair it. Send it back to Lancaster and we rebuild it — printed parts are made fresh, electronics are tested, drone is reflashed and recalibrated. Typical turnaround is two weeks. First-year warranty covers manufacturing defects free of charge. Crash damage is chargeable but priced fairly.
Software & battery
What about software and firmware updates?
We push firmware updates as they're released. The drones run open-source ArduPilot, so updates come from the active developer community as well as us. You'll always know what's changed and what's been added.
Will my battery work with both the Aero 2 and the Aero 3?
Yes. Both models use the same smart battery. One spare battery is usable in both drones, and one charging dock works for both.
Does the MemAero app work with my phone?
QGroundControl runs on iOS 14+ and Android 8+. Free download, no account creation required.
